If you were able to send a message to someone 25 years back in the past and tell them you could book flight tickets, transfer money, video-chat on the go, watch a movie, get health-tips, learn new skills & languages, locate & unlock your car (yes that’s possible!) - all with a device that fits in the palm of your hands, they’d probably think you were joking!
Today in 2017, almost everyone has a smartphone and life without its conveniences is hard to imagine. We consume information differently now – in great speed and greater volume. But how did we end up here? Let’s take a quick look:
Smartphones aimed at making communication easier
The Oxford dictionary defines a smartphone as “a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded apps”.
If you consider that definition, then the first smartphone in human history was IBM’s Simon. It was launched in 1992. It was the first ever mobile phone with not just an OS but also a touch screen with stylus and it cost a whopping $899!
A Decade of Constant Improvement
In the next 8 to 10 years that followed, several smartphones were launched in the market with features like a bulky communicator that enabled the user to make & receive calls, send faxes, email etc. The phones also had touch screens + QWERTY keypads to help type faster and much more!
Communicating was much easier now. The email and fax feature made it easier for executives to work on the go. However, making calls was very expensive and you were even charged for receiving them.
The term smartphone wasn’t coined yet! Towards the end of 1990, as internet availability had improved greatly, these phones were now referred to as ‘Personal Digital Assistants’ or PDAs.
Smartphones took care of our communication needs, but what next?
Entertainment, utilities and making the world a smaller place with apps!
Even though most smartphones already had apps, their importance was put under the spotlight in 2007 with the birth of Android and other operating software. This was the beginning of an era that almost felt like a science fiction movie!
Enhanced User Experience
Developers on all platforms came up with apps that provided us with a world of conveniences and entertainment. Smartphones weren’t just for businessmen or the executive class anymore - they were for everyone!
In time, the keypad was removed and full-touch feature was implemented. An attractive design and an intuitive interface improved the user experience immensely!
Today and Tomorrow
Today’s smartphone is a slim, lightweight device that fits in your pocket and brings you closer to the rest of the world than ever before!
In the coming years, we can expect bigger and brighter screens, greater battery life, faster processing and many other enhancements. With 4G now going mainstream, internet connectivity has become incredibly quick.
